Western Cuban Calisto
Description and Similar Species: Wingspan 33-37mm. Similar to Cuban Common Calisto C. herophile but darker and with only three post-median white dots rather than four, the first is missing and the fourth is displaced backwards.
Range: Endemic to Cuba. Found in the southern portion of Isla de La Juventud, and at the north-eastern end of the Guaniguanico Cordillera (the range of hills in western Cuba running through both Pinar del Rio and Artemisa provinces). It has also been found in the Jardines de Hershey, Mayabeque which lies 40 km east of Habana. And here you can read the paper by Álvarez y Corso (2020) on the Butterflies of Hershey. It seems likely that it will be found to be more widespread in western Cuba. These colonies on the mainland have been shown to have subtle differences in DNA and morphology and so have been give subspecific status (Álvarez & Núñez, 2021).
Status: A newly discovered species. This is one of five new species of Calisto described in 2019 and you can read the paper here.
Nectar Plants: Unknown.
Larval Foodplants: Unknown grasses.
