Previously known as: Asbolis capucinus but following a genetic review of the Hesperiidae in 2022 by Zhang et al Taxonomic changes suggested by the genomic analysis of Hesperiidae (Lepidoptera) it was concluded that Pyrrhocalles Mabille, 1904 and Asbolis Mabille, 1904 are junior subjective synonyms of Choranthus Scudder, 1872.
Description and Similar Species: Wingspan 42-59mm. Forewing uppersides are dark brown with a pale dot in the centre and an orange-brown area along the basal costa. males are darker than females. Undersides are a rich chestnut brown. The head, thorax and abdomen have blueish hair-scales.
Range: Florida USA, Cuba and Bahamas.
Status: Widespread and common in woodland glades, rides and gardens.
Nectar Plants: Bougainvillea, Stachytarpheta jamaicensis, Bidens pilosa, Pluchea odorata, Tournefortia hirsutissima, Lantana camara, Flaveria linearis.
Larval Foodplants: Various palms including Serenoa repens Saw Palmetto.
