Description and Similar Species: Wingspan 36-40mm. Sexually dimorphic with males having a large area of black on the hindwing which is lacking in females. The distinctive shape of the hindwing with its rather cut-off appearance is diagnostic.
Range: Southern USA down to Ecuador. In the West Indies found only on Cuba and Jamaica where it was first discovered in 1992 (Smith).
Status: Local in the western half of Cuba with a smaller number of records from the east. Found mainly on the edges of forest and in forest clearings.
Nectar Plants: Tournefortia, Bidens and Daucus though mainly found mud-puddling.
Larval Foodplants: Desmodium canum (Hernández) and Senna sp.
