Description and Similar Species: Wingspan 90-110mm. Unmistakable resembling a very large rather slow-flying Heliconiid.
Range: Southern USA to Brazil and also Cuba and Hispaniola. It has been reported as a wanderer to Jamaica, Puerto Rico and St. Lucia.
Status: The subspecies demeter is endemic to Cuba where it is rare, found only in the mountains of the east of the island though it has also been seen at San Cristobal, Pinar del Rio.
Nectar Plants: Chromolaena, Asclepias and Lantana.
Larval Foodplants: Eggs are laid on the leaves of Asclepias curassavica (Asclepiadaceae), Carica papaya (Caricaceae) and Ficus sp. (Moraceae).
