Description and Similar Species: Wingspan 46-68mm. Sexes similar but there are two colour forms - a dark summer form with the hindwing almost entirely black and and a paler over-wintering form in which the hindwing is mottled orange.
Range: Widespread throughout Canada and the USA.
Status: It has occurred just once as a rare straggler to Cuba in 1943 at Playa de Bellamar, Matanzas City (Hernández, 2004).
