Kricogonia cabrerai Ramsden, 1920
Cuban Sulphur
Description and Similar Species: Wingspan 46-64mm. Sexually dimorphic. It is similar to Lyside Sulphur K. lyside with which it can easily be confused. Males are white above with just a yellow basal streak on the forewing whereas K. lyside has a more extensive area of yellow. The hindwing has a short black bar perpendicular to the costa (reduced to black spots in some specimens). Females are either bright yellow above and undersides are paler yellow sometimes pale greenish-yellow, or they can be white above and below but with a creamy underside hindwing. The main identification feature however of both sexes of K. cabrerai is the distinctive mottled appearance of the underside hindwing. On K. lyside this is much plainer but note that here the surface of the wings are quite undulating or rippled between the veins which can give the appearance of being mottled in certain light conditions.
Range: Endemic to Cuba.
Status: Restricted to the eastern part of the island where it is sometimes common near the coast.
Nectar Plants: Stachytarpheta, Antigonon and Bidens.
Larval Foodplants: Guaiacum officinale as K. lyside.
