Description and Similar Species: Wingspan 54-70mm. Sexes similar though females are slightly larger. The only confusion species is Variegated Fritillary E. claudia with which it often flies. It has a more patterned upperside than E. hegesia especially on the hindwing.
Range: Southern USA to Argentina and many of the Caribbean islands.
Status: Widely distributed in Cuba but local and sometimes common where it occurs. Found in open grassy places and roadsides.
Nectar Plants: Bidens pilosa, Lantana, Stachytarpheta jamaicensis, Turnera.
Larval Foodplants: Larvae have been reared on Passiflora, Turnera and Hybanthus.
