Now where was I? The last few weeks have been very busy with swift surveys and various mothing nights and events so I've had no time to continue with the blog of our June trip to Cuba. But following this weekend's trip to Derbyshire and Yorkshire things now get a bit easier and I'll have a bit more time to do so. Our trip north was to take part, along with hundreds of others, in the Hen Harrier Weekend event at Edale in The Peak District NP to protest at the illegal slaughter of Hen Harriers and other birds of prey, not to mention Mountain Hares, by gamekeepers on grouse moor estates in the north of England.
We were met by Henry at Edale station - he was the only Hen Harrier we saw that day!
Similar events took place over the weekend throughout England, Scotland and N Ireland. Whilst down here in the south of England the illegal persecution of raptors has declined it is very different in the north of England and in Scotland. In fact it is utterly shameful!
But we had an inspiring day, met a few old friends and made several new ones too. You can read about the events and more on Mark Avery's blog.

All in all it was a very sobering day and, despite looking, its hardly surprising that we didn't see a single bird of prey while we were there - and it was a nice sunny day perfect for raptors. In fact we got all the way back to Kettering before we even saw a buzzard.
